Straining to pass stool!
When you notice baby straining, hold him or her upright so that gravity can assist the process of pushing out a stool. Massage the lower back at the same time. Apply a little petroleum jelly to your baby’s anus, just-just introducing it (about 2 mm, no more) and all around the sphincter too. Often if the first bit of hard stool can be more easily expelled, the rest is passed without a problem.

History

The Sister Lilian CentreTM is a unique pregnancy, parenting and health advice centre situated in Lynnwood Ridge, Pretoria. It was started by well-known South African pregnancy and parenting advisor, Sister Lilian, who did her original nursing degree through the University of Stellenbosch and trained as a midwife in Johannesburg. She is also a qualified reflexologist and has done a course in Ayurvedic Medicine. Sister Lilian's speciality since 1988 has been in the fields of pregnancy, birth, childcare and parenting although she has always retained an active interest in health generally.
Seven years after qualifying as a nurse and midwife, Sister Lilian started a private nursing practice, teaching antenatal classes and advising mothers after birth on all matters related to their babies and their own adjustment to mothering. She soon started assisting couples with home birth, active birth in special hospital units and water birth. As the need arose amongst her clients, she developed a variety of courses like Home Emergency Care for Families, Nanny & Caregiver Training and Natural Health for the Family.
Sister Lilian's professional activities developed into the Sister Lilian CentreTM within a few years and the Centre has been active ever since. A dedicated team assists Sister Lilian with day-to-day activities. The Sister Lilian CentreTM adopts an approach of integrating conventional and complementary health systems throughout all activities. Sister Lilian believes implicitly in empowering parents to become active partners in the health of their families and rely more on instinct and commonsense while raising their children. This approach is followed by the whole Sister Lilian CentreTM team.
Workshops are presented for both the public and healthcare professionals about a workable, innovative approach to health, pregnancy, birth and parenting. Not surprisingly, Baby and Child Sleep, Nutrition and Behaviour remain three of the most sought after workshop topics all over South Africa.
The Sister Lilian CentreTM also receives international recognition. Sister Lilian was nominated as one of only two South Africans to partake in the annual meeting and conference of the Coalition for Improving Maternal Services in Boston, USA in February 2006. In May 2008 the Sister Lilian CentreTM featured as one of 17 case studies in the Commonwealth Health Ministers Book for their annual meeting in Geneva. Sister Lilian was invited to Argentina in March 2008 as the keynote speaker at a Midwifery conference. Also in 2008 Sister Lilian's books were translated into Romanian and Spanish for distribution in Colombia.
2009 ushered in three huge developments for the Sister Lilian CentreTM and their clients. The first major development was the move to a more sustainable business model, guided by new partner in the Sister Lilian CentreTM, Alan Paramor. Alan and Sister Lilian embarked on a course to ensure that the advice that has changed so many expectant couples and parents' lives in the past will continue to be accessible to those who want and need advice that really works!
In 2009, an all-new range of homeopathic Sister Lilian Remedies was launched in South Africa. These unique and special remedies were formulated by Sister Lilian in conjunction with South Africa's largest and most respected complementary health company, Vital Health Foods, because a mother needs to be sure!
No sooner had these remedies started proving their efficacy for common pregnancy, baby and childhood complaints than a new reality pregnancy and parenting show hit the screens on SABC2, with Sister Lilian as presenter. The nine part series was a great hit with Moms around South Africa and it is hoped that another series will be possible in the not too distant future.
The Sister Lilian CentreTM in Pretoria also organises and runs the hugely successful annual Sensitive Midwifery SymposiumTM. This initiative started in 1996 and has since then grown to be hosted in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban and to annually attract 850 nursing professionals working in the fields of pregnancy and childcare. From 2011, the Sensitive Midwifery Symposium will be spreading it's wings and visiting not three, but five Provinces allowing more professionals the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful initiative. In 2008 the Sister Lilian Centre started the Sensitive Midwifery MagazineTM which is published quarterly.A survey conducted at the 2010 Sensitive Midwifery Symposium indicated that the magazine now has a readership of no less than 10,000 per issue.
The Sister Lilian CentreTM is constantly growing and developing to ensure that their approach remains sound and is as widely recognised and active as possible. In September 2009 the Sister Lilian CentreTM turned a proud 21 years old and their mission remains to improve pregnancy and parenting in South Africa in all they do.
