That sticky white coating babies have at birth, called vernix caseosa, is a vital protective layer while the infant's skin is building it's natural protective barrier. This occurs in the early days (and weeks) as the skin's pH balance changes to acidic from alkaline and is colonised by good bacteria. Leaving it on as long as possible is GOOD! What's more, don't use soaps or lotions until the first month has passed, as these break down the natural lipids (fat molecules) and dry baby's skin, making them more prone to reactions, allergies and rashes.

There is quite a common pattern to when and in which order baby's primary or milk teeth erupt, but this is by no means cast in stone, so there is no need to be concerned if your baby's teething pattern seems different from others.
