If at all possible avoid use of nipple shields in an attempt to protect sore nipples as these often exacerbate the problem and can lead to insufficient emptying of the breast with blocked ducts and possibly mastitis resulting. Baby might also find it more difficult to learn to drink directly from the breast again.
